Purpose of this document

To serve as a basis for discussion and improving the specification, sharing ideas, etc etc

NB These pages are seriously stale by now... Please visit the Bika LIMS 2 project for the latest developments

Document history – Important notes to Version 2.0

HTML wireframe model has been integrated in version 2

Only functionality additional to that already available in Bika is discussed here. The specification for the original Bika, customised to wine lab specs, and which is used in the bika online demo, was written in Afrikaans. The system is pretty well described in the Laboratory Manual available for download at http://www.bikalabs.com/manual/

Document convention

All use cases are acted out by role players which can be the LIMS itself, other interfaced systems or any user authorised as admin, labmanager, labtechnician, labclerk or client

In most cases client  refers to the client’s contact, their representatives in the system

Wire frame model

Many links in this document lead directly to corresponding functions in a HTML 'wire frame' model

Lingo

The plural for 1 analysis is many analyses

Analyses and associated objects are differentiated between those ‘Chemical’ or ‘Micro-Biological’. Abbreviated as ‘Chem’ and ‘MB’ respectively. me thinks MicroB is hippest

AR now means both Chem and MB analysis requests. Also see Prefixes

Reports – this term in certain contexts refer to analysis result reports as per email, fax or print. A separate paragraph is dedicated to Management reports

AR - indicates an Analysis Request, the collection of analyses requested per sample

JC – indicates Job Card, analyses grouped together for workflow purposes

Text in square brackets indicates push buttons, eg [Submit]

Text between vertical lines indicates navigational tabs, eg | Home |

Texts to be displayed ‘literally’ on invoices etc, are presented in quotes ‘ ‘. These texts are very bad draft still and must be finalised per BikaClient

Not in the Scope of this document

Proof of e-mail delivery

Impossible with current SMTP mail serving technology. Instead the responsibility to report non-delivery are shifted to clients by informing them to “Please contact laboratory if results are not posted within 7 working days”
